Report on The 55th Annual Meeting of the Irish Otolaryngology Head and Neck Society.
Report by: Ms Phoebe Roche, Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, and Mr. Nash Patil, Sligo General Hospital
Sponsors: Stallergenes, ALK-Abello, Oticon
The 55th Annual Meeting of the Irish Otolaryngology Head and Neck society took place in the beautiful setting of Lough Eske Castle, Co Donegal. Organised by Mr Robin Adair, of Ulster Hospital, and Mr. Nash Patil, of Sligo General Hospital, this annual meeting is considered a key event in the Irish Otolaryngology calendar, and once again proved hugely successful.
A wide variety of papers were presented. Of particular interest at this years meeting, were the papers presented on oropharyngeal cancers (Michael Moran – First prize winner, Karen Davies – University Hospital Galway, Robert Woods – St James’ Hospital, A Wang – Sloan Kettering Memorial).
Topics such as epistaxis in the anti-coagulated patient (F Toner) and total rhinectomy rehabilitation (Thavakumar Subramanian) ensured audience engagement throughout both days.
In addition to local presenters, the guest speakers included Mr. Ralph Mosges, Germany, who gave a very interesting talk on sub-lingual immunotherapy; Dr David Edgar from Belfast; and Mr. Shyam Singham from Torbay.
Ms. Janet Wilson of Newcastle upon Tyne, gave the Wilde Discourse this year – a poignant, incisive lecture that captivated her audience.
The final day of the meeting concluded with a standing ovation and a warm tribute to Professor Michael Walsh of Beaumont hospital on the occasion of his retirement. The tribute was put together by Peter Lacy and Tom Moran, and contributors including surgeons and colleagues from Ireland, the UK, Australia, Malaysia, USA and Canada. They paid homage to the phenomenal impact on otolaryngology the Professor has had over the past 40 years. His retirement will truly be a huge loss to patients, colleagues and trainees.
As Mr. Joe Toner, President, brought the proceedings to a close, it was widely acknowledged that this was one of the best IOS conferences ever.
We look forward to IOS 2015!
